Telling tales out of Africa

Ref. 28964-13AN AFRICAN artist held students at Bradon Forest School spellbound with tales of his childhood and demonstrations of the ancient arts of mask-making.

Odion Ogogo, originally from Nigeria, travelled from his London studios to take part in the special activities organised to mark National Storytelling Week.

Librarian Joy Major, who organised the event, said: "It was absolutely brilliant.

"He told stories about his childhood as he was making masks in clay and they were all spellbound.

"He also told a wonderful tale about a princess who couldn't choose who to marry.

"I think he taught the students how to listen and about respect as well telling them about a different way of life."

Mr Ogogo also demonstrated traditional coil pot design, sculptural techniques and how to design and make traditional jewellery.

His visit also ran sessions with Year 6 and 7 students from Shaw Ridge, Tregoze and St Mary's Primary Schools.

Bradon Forest students made the trip to St Mary's Primary School last week as part of National Storytelling Week.

Accompanied by props, they recounted tales they had written themselves to the youngest pupils.
