Past pupil returns to launch project

FORMER pupil Dennis Barnard returned to dig the first sod of earth for Chapmanslade Primary School's new hall and classroom project.

Mr Barnard, 70, who is parish council chairman and a past governor, left the school in 1944, but has kept up close links ever since.

Workmen moved onto the Victorian school site on Monday and are due to complete the project in six months' time.

Two of the school's three classes are in mobile classrooms, but they will be moving out for the new academic year in September. The building will feature three permanent classrooms, a library and computer area. There will be a hall for PE, exhibitions and dinners.
