WORK started on the £2.5m refurbishment of Salisbury Arts Centre, in Bedwin Street, this week, with the arrival of Poole-based construction firm Bluestone.
The 44-week project will see an extensive refurbishment of the Grade II listed building, formerly St Edmund's Church, as well as an extension that, when complete, will provide the local community with state-of-the-art facilities in which to enjoy and participate in the arts.
Features will include an additional small performance space, a creative arts workshop suite, with special provision for electronic equipment and computers, an upgraded foyer, box office and exhibition space, a new administrative base, meeting facilities and an improved cafe and bar.
The project is particularly challenging for Bluestone, as it involves sensitive conservation work - the original building dates to the 13th Century.
"We are delighted to be involved in this challenging project, which will provide a fantastic newly developed venue for local people to enjoy and participate in the arts," said Paul Gale, Bluestone's construction manager.
"We are looking forward to the challenge the refurbishment presents and to ensuring the character and atmosphere of the beautiful St Edmund's Church is retained and restored."
Jill Low, Salisbury Arts Centre's director, added: "We are confident that we have the right construction company and design team to carry this complex project through to a successful conclusion.
"We are looking forward to delivering with them a fully resourced arts centre for the people of Salisbury."
The refurbishment and extension scheme is being funded by the Arts Council England Lottery Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Salisbury district council.
