IN AN unpredictable division, Nathan Byrne thinks even the first month might not be long enough to tell how well Swindon Town are likely to do in League One this season.

Byrne, at 22 one of the most experienced members of the Robins’ youthful squad, was a regular in the Swindon side which finished eighth last term.

And experiences of that campaign, during which Town went through extreme peaks and troughs of form, has made him think a slow or a fast start does not necessarily pre-empty a good or bad season.

“I think we went through a patch last season where we didn’t win in a month or so and we still ended up eighth,” he told the Adver.

“That might happen in the first month, it might happen in the last month and it might not happen at all. I think that’s League One all over, really.

“You never really know until you start how well your team is going to be doing.

“A lot of teams get bigged up as well and then they fail miserably.

“I think it’s a wait and see thing and hopefuly we impress.”

Byrne thinks the overall quality of the division has improved over the summer.

He said: “I think League One is always going to be tough but personally I think it’s got a bit stronger than last season.

“The teams that have come up and gone down are all strong sides when you look at them.

“Every game is going to be tough this season and there won’t be any games we go into thinking we’ve won it already.

“As long as the boys know that and they’re willing to battle for every point then I think we’ll be alright.”

Finally, Byrne is hopeful he and his teammates can avenge their JPT area final shoot-out defeat to Peterborough United over the coming months - and he wouldn’t mind a repeat fixture against a Premier League giant either.

“It’s always got to be league first but how we went out last season in the cup, all the lads are very disappointed we didn’t get to play at Wembley,” he said. “In the others, you always want to play high sides. We’d love to take a team like Chelsea again if we can get them.”
