RACING: Balder heads for Punchestown

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Balder Succes and Wayne Hutchinson win for Barbury Castle trainer Alan King at Aintree last Saturday Balder Succes and Wayne Hutchinson win for Barbury Castle trainer Alan King at Aintree last Saturday

BALDER Succes will take on the best two-milers around at Punchestown after his convincing victory in the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree on Saturday.

Trainer Alan King is considering the Boylesports.com Champion Chase on April 29 to see if the talented six-year-old is again up to competing at the highest level.

"Balder Succes delivered impressively in the Grade One novice chase on the Saturday, and I see the handicapper has put him up 9lb to 162, so we are climbing towards the top of the two-mile tree," the Barbury Castle handler told alankingracing.co.uk.

"It paid off not going to Cheltenham and he is still relatively fresh, so he may well go to Punchestown for their big two-miler.

"We know he stays a little bit further, but at the moment I would be inclined to stick to two miles.

"He has to improve a bit but we will see how far down the Champion Chase route he can go.

"Another summer on his back may just help."
