GOLF: PGA qualification the perfect winter warmer for Nick
BOWOOD’S Nick Brennan has found the perfect remedy for the winter blues after qualifying to represent the English PGA in the PGAs of Europe International Team Challenge (ITC) next month.
Brennan, 31, who lives in Chippenham, earned a dream place in the Great Britain & Ireland squad for September’s PGA Cup after finishing fourth at the Glenmuir PGA Championship at Slaley Hall, Northumberland, in June and it was that same result that has seen the Bowood club pro picked for this year’s ITC.
The three-strong English team will take on the rest of Europe at the Onyria Palmares Beach and Golf Resort in the Algarve, Portugal, on November 20-23 and Brennan is looking forward to another international experience in a standout year.
“The top three players from the Glenmuir Championship got picked for the ITC and I was fourth so I was expecting to be first reserve – but Benn Barham couldn’t go so I found out that I was in the team,” said Brennan, who beat Chip Sullivan in the singles at the PGA Cup to help Great Britain and Ireland tie with the USA.
“It’s great because it gives me something to aim for in the winter.
“Usually, you’re not looking forward to the weather and everything like that but it gives you a boost and keeps you motivated.
“The PGA Cup was incredible and competing in something like this can only help my profile as a golfer. Maybe I’ll be able to pick up a sponsor from it. The only strange thing is that I’m competing for the English PGA but I’m actually Irish.
“My folks are from there and I went to university over there. I could have qualified for the Irish PGA but it makes sense that I compete for England because I’ve already got a bit of rapport with the other team members after the PGA Cup.”
