SWINDON TOWN: Barthram claims squad has the character to bounce back
THE strength of character within the Swindon Town squad will stand them in good stead according to defender Jack Barthram.
Despite major changes at the County Ground over the summer, which saw the playing staff revamped and a host of high earners moved on, the young squad which remains is quickly gelling although they have lost their last two League One matches.
Barthram believes senior players such as Darren Ward and Jay McEveley are playing important roles in helping the youngsters battle through games, but insisted even the more inexperienced players are capable of showing the strength of character needed to compete in League One.
“We are still learning and we are getting more tough as a team, harder to beat, which is an important thing,” he said.
“Everyone in this squad has character and they’re pulling up their sleeves and digging in, and that’s important.
“It’s not always like that so maybe we are unique.
“The senior heads like Wardy and Jay McEveley are vocal, and other players too, and that gives you a second wind to chase things and grind out those results.
“We’re still in high spirits even though we’ve lost our last couple and it’s been a tough couple of weeks.
“If the results had gone the other way we would be in high spirits because the performances have been good.
“We need to grind the results out and you have to be together when you do that, especially away from home when it’s harder because you don’t have the fans there.”
Barthram also revealed teammate Ryan Mason is something of a psychic when it comes to the FA Cup draw.
“At the time I was with one of the boys, Ryan Mason, and he actually called the draw and said he thought we would get Macclesfield away,” he said.
“I was amazed when it came out, but I saw Swindon lost to Macclesfield last season so this is going to be a hard match.”
