ABANDONED trolleys have been plaguing the car parks of Devizes again over the past few weeks as the town is busy with people shopping for Christmas.

Groups of trolleys from Wilkinson’s, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have been left in the central car park in Devizes on several occasions.

Another hotspot is the Sheep Street car park, where a line of small Sainsbury’s trolleys have been left near the railings and disabled parking bay.

Devizes town councillor Geoffrey Brewer said: “Shops have in the past promised to do something about this but clearly they haven’t. This is an absolute disgrace.

“Abandoned trolleys affect people being able to park and if vandals get hold of them they could do untold damage.”

Mr Brewer has suggested coin-operated trolleys seem to be the only answer to the problem, though Tesco and Wilkinson are already using this type.

A spokesperson for Wilkinson said it was not as much of an issue for them as their trolleys are coin operated and staff do go out and collect them if they are told about them.

Sainsbury’s has stated in the past that it has no plans for coin-operated trolleys.

Store manager Steve Pugsley said: “We have people out collecting them throughout the day and we will carry on doing this to make sure trolleys are put back in front of the store.”

Several retailers have a contract with website Trolleywise, which collects trolleys if people report where they are.
