Marlborough Concert Orchestra is singing with joy after receiving £500 from Waitrose.

The money was made available through the supermarket’s national grant scheme Music Matters, which supports musical community activities.

It will go towards the cost of staging a family concert on October 19 at Christ Church in Marlborough.

The concert is for families who are unable to come to the orchestra’s usual concerts held three times a year on Saturday evenings.

Anna Marsden, who plays in the orchestra, said: “We are thrilled to have been selected for this grant out of applicants from across the country.”

All proceeds will go to Christchurch’s community activities. Tickets from Sound Knowledge or (01672) 514336.

A donation of £1,000 was also given to Pewsey Music Festival, which will help pay for acts.

Organiser Liz Bowden said: “Other times when you fill out grant application forms you expect to be unsuccessful, so when this came around we thought we might as well give it a go and we were over the moon when we found out we were successful.”
