Lock gates on the Caen Hill flight in Devizes have been restored in a £15,000 project.

Two gates at Manifold lock, at the top of the flight on the Kennet and Avon Canal near the Black Horse pub, have been repaired to ensure they stay watertight in use.

The work has been done by the Canal and River Trust as part of a programme of work costing more than £300,000.

Robert Eaton, Canal and River Trust construction supervisor, said: “Over time, with boats going through them and being regularly opened and closed, lock gates do suffer a bit of wear and tear.

"The repairs will give the gates a new lease of life on what is one of the most popular sections of canal.”

  • An application to demolish a dilapidated workshop building at the Canal and River Trust’s base off Bath Road, Devizes, has been submitted to Wiltshire Council. The trust plans to replace it with two mobile buildings as a temporary measure until a permanent location is found.
