Wadworth has launched two limited edition beers, formulated to match the characteristics of a Bath Rugby player past and present.

The Devizes brewery already uses its oldest and most popular ale, 6X, as a sponsorship brand for Bath Rugby.

Now, having spent time with Wadworth brewer Colin Oke, current Bath Rugby winger Matt Banahan and former prop Duncan Bell have each created an individual brew designed to reflect their personalities.

Duncan Bell - or ‘Belly’ as he is affectionately known - stamped his personality on Belly Buster which, much like Duncan, is full bodied with plenty of character.

Described as a golden, best bitter with a citrus zing and additional spiced hops, the brew has a little toasted malty sweetness that fades in the clean and dry finish. The hops are Celeia, Challenger, Golding and US Cascade, with pale ale malt, wheat malt and caramalt.

Jersey boy Matt Banahan added his quick wit and character to Jersey Flyer, which boasts big and bold flavours to reflect his position as winger.

An English bitter with both fruit and bitterness on the palate, Jersey Flyer is described as having a malty sweetness that gives way to a peppery note for a smooth finish. The hops are Brambling Cross, Cascade and Golding Pale malt, with wheat malt, caramalt, crystal 60 and roasted barley.

“Creating a beer isn’t something you generally get to do as a rugby player, but this has been a really fun and different experience for us," said Matt.

"The Wadworth guys are so knowledgeable and have helped us a lot. Now it’s all about finding out which our supporters like best – mine or Belly’s!”

The verdict as to whose brew is best will come down to the fans when Belly Buster and Jersey Flyer go head-to-head at tastings prior to Bath’s forthcoming home game against Cardiff Blues on Saturday, January 25, kick-off 3pm).

As a Bath Rugby fan himself, brewer Colin also found the experience an enjoyable one.

“The opportunity to utilise my brewing expertise to create personalised beers for two rugby legends has been a real honour,” he said.

“Of course, I like both brews equally, but I am intrigued to find out who comes out on top!”

Those visiting The Rec will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred brew at the game or by emailing ‘Team Bell’ or ‘Team Banahan’ along with their name, address and telephone number to yourviews@bathrugby.com.
