A historic tree, estimated to be around 500-years-old, has fallen in Savernake Forest.
The Crockmere Oak has previously been described as being in 'fair condition', although the base shows some signs of rotting and hollowing.
Walker, Simon Smith could not believe his eyes when he stumbled across the historic oak lying flat on the ground in Savernake Forest.
The protected woodland, just outside of Marlborough, is full of hundreds of ancient and historic trees. Some trees in this forest, such as the Big Belly Oak, are believed to date as far back as William the Conqueror.

Describing his discovery, Simon Smith, told the Gazette and Herald: "I had been riding my bike around the forest and local byways and having a wonderful day with the spring flowers being in full swing.
"When I came across the fallen tree I had an immediate reaction of loss and sadness. The named trees of Savernake are like old friends to so many people."
Forestry England, which manages Savernake Forest, has been contacted for further clarification on what exactly caused the historic tree to fall.
